Eligibility

Children of any age who are engaged in the family court system due to abuse or neglect. To be a volunteer, individuals must be 21 years of age or older. Must attend an information session, complete an application, provide three references and interview. Must complete a PA Criminal Background Check, a PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprinting and a Mandated Reporter Training, in addition to other background clearances run by staff.

Application process

Volunteers are appointed by judges; Individuals seeking an advocate for a child can ask the child's caseworker at Lancaster or Lebanon County Children and Youth Social Service Agencies.

Description

CASA Volunteers are citizens who are trained to advocate for the best interest of children in the foster care system. They are assigned to a child or sibling group and get to know the child, as well as biological parents, resource parents, caseworkers, teachers, therapists, and doctors. They meet with the parties on their case regularly, write reports to the court, and attend hearings to testify to what is in the child's best interest. They investigate, facilitate, advocate, and monitor throughout the life of the case, until the child achieves a safe and permanent home.
