Provides fire prevention programs, firefighter training programs, and fire safety education to the community.

Programs whose primary purpose is to make the public aware of the measures that people can take to reduce the risk of fires or accidents in the home, at school, at work, in the air or on the water or while walking, driving or riding as a passenger in a motor vehicle; and/or which provide instructions for preparing for and surviving an accident should one occur.

Provides age-appropriate fire and burn prevention education to children. Teaches those who are most venerable for risk of burns, how to protect themselves and others from injury by giving them the knowledge and tools they need to be safe. Provides Fire and EMS services to the Borough of Chambersburg and mutual aid to surrounding areas via the 911 system.

The Bureau of Fire serves the City of Williamsport, the county seat for Lycoming County. One of its divisions, Prevention, includes fire prevention and safety education.

Development and outreach of children's injury prevention strategies that include but are not limited to helmet safety, fire safety, farm safety, general/household safety and car seat/seat belt safety. Also provides volunteer speakers/educators, educational materials and games and referral services. Coordinates and schedules car seat checks and child passenger safety technician classes.

Offers car seat inspection station. Rental car seats are available on a limited basis through the PennDOT Loaner Program. Provides fire prevention materials and education on different safety topics on request.

Provides response to situations that threaten the safety and health of residents due to fire, hazardous conditions, environmental emergencies, medical emergencies, or similar events. Enforces the International Fire Code and the City of York Property Maintenance Code. Offers free smoke detectors and batteries.

Offers a series of pamphlets for children and parents, and a comprehensive lesson plan to be used by those teaching prevention in pre-school programs and elementary schools. Programs to train the trainer are also available.
