AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with education awards and other benefits in exchange for a year or two of community service. AmeriCorps members help meet the nation's critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment.

Recruits and trains individuals to serve as AmeriCorps members.

Finds older volunteers to assist with specific duties within programs of the Office of Human Services. Assists programs such as senior centers, PA MEDI insurance counseling, and the OMBUDSMAN program as needs arise.

Provides assistance with daily tasks and encourage participants to stay active and connected. Volunteers also provide needed respite for caregivers so they can run errands, take a needed break or tend to themselves, their families and other commitments. Recruits volunteer Adults 55 or older who want to share their experience and compassion for others to become a Senior Companion. Senior Companions receive a small tax-free financial stipend, training, and transportation cost (mileage) reimbursement.

Foster Grandparents are classroom volunteers that share their time to enhance the quality of life of children and youth in preschools, Head Start centers and schools. Provides per hour stipend, meals while volunteering, mileage/transportation, clearances and training.

RSVP provides volunteer opportunities in the local community including meal delivery, community food pantries, senior community centers, transporting clients who no longer drive to medical appointments and to shop for groceries, and team counseling on Medicare and health-insurcance-related matters.

Provides volunteer opportunities for retired and older adults at the senior centers.

Trains volunteers to educate and inform potential recipients or caretakers about Medicare, leading to increased access to benefits and savings.

Assists older Spanish-speaking adults with personal needs, gain access to health care, and a range of community service resources. Helps seniors to avoid isolation and remain independent.

Foster Grandparent Volunteers help children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring, and guide children at a critical time in their lives.

Provides opportunities for individuals to engage in volunteer services. Matches interested volunteers with appropriate volunteer positions.

Offers extensive training in several specific areas of service and provides with meaningful ways to help abused persons and raise awareness about domestic abuse. Volunteer opportunities range from legal services, counseling services, the safe house, outreach and education, at the main office, and at the thrift shop.

Matches adults, age 55 and older, with volunteer opportunities that suit their skills, interests, and availability. Volunteers can receive AmeriCorp Member Benefits during term of service including living allowance, money for college/trade school, loan deferment, professional development, and an alumni network.

Provides civic opportunity that gives individuals a chance to network with other like-minded peers, explore leadership possibilities, learn new skills, and have fun. Volunteers choose how, where, and how often they want to serve, with commitments ranging from a few hours to 40 hours per week. RSVP volunteers do not receive any monetary incentive or stipend, but the RSVP project may reimburse volunteers for certain out-of-pocket costs

Recruits and trains volunteer reading coaches to increase literacy development by expanding opportunities for children to have shared adult-child book reading time, ultimately helping youth read on grade level by 3rd grade and stay on track to school success. Both in person and virtual opportunities are available.

Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors, and tutors to at-risk children in an educational setting. The program provides a way for volunteers to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities. All one needs to join is the ability to give the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future. If individuals are 55 or older and want to share their experience and compassion, then they have what it takes to be a Foster Grandparent. GECAC will provide a stipend or other benefits that enable individuals to participate as Foster Grandparents without cost to themselves .

An organization of community volunteers that leads, inspires and mobilizes individuals and contributes to help provide solutions to essential health and human service issues to improve the quality of life for the people of Columbia and Montour. At The United Way, we do not aim to minimize the issues- we aim to end them. Through the collection and allocation of donations, we currently fund 23 partner agencies, all with the aim of supporting community members in the areas of health, education, and financial stability. Please note, our United Way does not do an individual assistance. We are happy to help with local referrals.

Promotes the welfare and humane treatment of animals and serves as an advocate on their behalf.

Provides opportunities to extend supportive services in Health, Education, and Welfare settings to children having special or exceptional needs. Benefits include annual physical exam, free lunch-time meal, recognition events, socialization, specialized training, tax-free hourly monetary reimbursement and transportation assistance.
